11 Feb Museums and Galleries in Corfu
S&O VILLAS are passionate about all things beautiful. We believe Corfu Island is a magnet for beauty, art and culture that visitors can easily find represented in some of the island’s finest public museums and galleries.
ACHILLEION PALACE Built by the Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the 1890’s, this rather effeminate construction, is other than very beautiful indeed, full of fascinating belongings, a large collection of paintings and wall murals, as well as some marvellous sculptures both inside and out. It gets rather busy during the summer months so go early.
ANTIVOUNIOTISSA MUSEUM A rather fine collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine treasures and ecclesiastical artefacts dating back some 500 years. It is located in the Church of Panagia Antivouniotissa, one of the oldest churches in the Ionian islands.
ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF CORFU As well as a very fine collection of archaeological artefacts found in Corfu, the museum houses the impressive Gorgon Medusa pediment from the Temple of Artemis, which is the largest rendition of the lively snake headed deity of its kind. This museum is currently undergoing major refurbishments so check opening hours before visiting.
MUNICIPAL GALLERY OF CORFU “At a crossroads of peoples and civilizations, a cradle of arts since the 18th century, a place full of life and rich in artistic potential, the Ionian Islands became not just the home of the avant-guarde of modern Greek art, but, first and foremost, the birthplace of numerous artistic quests that led to important achievements and revealed unlimited expressive resources”. An important collection of local artists housed in the west wing of the Palace of St Michael and St George.
MUSEUM OF ASIAN ART Housed in the Palace of St Michael and St George, this wonderful museum has over 11,000 artefacts from China, Korea and Japan amassed by Corfiot diplomat Grigorios Manos. It also hosts a number of successful temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Corfu is a 2021 EUROPEAN CULTURAL CAPITAL Candidate City.
Please check with us before visiting for opening hours and any current exhibitions.
