07 Jan Sports you can do in Corfu
When on holiday one can find most loved sports on Corfu Island with some holding prominence over others.
Corfu is the only place cricket has traditionally been played. Initially one could watch a match just in front of all the cafes at the Liston in the centre of Corfu Town but due to growing safety concerns to bystanders and parked cars, cricket is now taught and played in a purpose made pitch at the Corfu Marina.
Golf is, surprisingly, an established sport in Corfu. The Corfu Golf Course is a mature golf club in an undiscovered location near Ermones beach on the central west coast of Corfu. It is a highly rated 18 holes par-72 course and is open 7 days a week www.corfugolfclub.com
Kite surfing has caught in Corfu too with Chalikounas beach fast becoming a popular international destination for this fast and exciting sport. A well equipped kite and wind surfing school will have you flying the waves in no time.
Islanders love to sail and Corfiots have a long and ancient history of building boats with mythic abilities. There are many places you can learn to sail in Corfu, including Avlaki on the north east corner of the island with good constant winds and St George in Paghi offer an extensive range of sailing vessels. For larger boats with or without a skipper go to the Corfu Marina.
Corfu island’s crystal clear waters and fascinating shore line make it an ideal and safe destination for scuba diving holidays. There are many scuba diving schools around the island with Paleokastritsa being the most visited location because of its deep Mediterranean waters and multiple caves.
Tennis has been played for 129 years on the island of Corfu with the Corfu Tennis Club in the centre of Corfu Town having been established in 1891. Playing on one of its four courts is a cultural experience in itself that touches heart of the island’s tennis playing community. Most large hotels have tennis courts and drop-in visitors are usually most welcome.
