It’s two days to New Year Eve’s celebrations, which are traditionally celebrated with Champagne or good sparkling wine.

With many family dinners and lunches with friends over the next 48 hours, a good bottle of wine or two is certainly required.

This is S&O VILLAS’ list of 5 top Greek wines for the New Year, that have been awarded both nationally and internationally:

Apha Estate, Malagouzia

“A classy white wine with long finish and persistent aromas. It is richly textured with superb length and balance and is excellently married with green salads, baked vegetables, pasta, low fat fishes and a wide variety of Greek sea food “Meze”

Variety: Malagouzia 100%

Biblia Chora, Ovilos White

“The distinctive aroma of apricot and honey- a characteristic of Semillon- blends perfectly with the notes of citron and lemon from the north-Aegean Assyrtiko. A variety of recognizable, distinct aroma integrated with hints of vanilla and dry nuts, elegant, fat with a well balanced acidity structure that results in potential for ageing”

Variety: Semillon 50%, Assyrtiko 50%

Ktima Gerovassiliou, Avaton

“A luscious blend of three Greek indigenous red varieties: Limnio, Mavroudi and Mavrotragano. Limnio, mentioned by comic dramatist Aristophanes as “Limnia ampelos” in the 5th century BC (vine from the Greek island of Limnos), is the oldest attested Greek variety grape”

Food pairing: interesting partner to hearty stews, savoury dishes and flavoured game dishes.

Alpha Estate, Xinomavro

“Full mouth, rounded tannins, balanced acidity and well integrated wood tones. It has a long aftertaste with intense quince aroma. Perfect match with juicy red barbecued meats, spicy sausages, red baked peppers in olive oil, stew rabbit, light spicy fool body cheeses”

Variety: Xinomavro 100%.

Estate Argyros – Vinsanto 20 1991

“The popular and award-winning label Vinsanto is a constant value in Greek sweet wines. Beautiful, warm sweetness offset by excellent acidity, leading to a great sweet wine with a very distinctive profile”

Variety: Aidani, Athiri, Assyrtiko, can be aged

We wish you a fabulous and tasty start to the New Year and may 2016 fulfil your hearts’ deepest wishes.
