Corfu Island is home to some twenty Greek Orthodox monasteries.
The island’s beauty, strong energy and majestic atmosphere attract many spiritual seekers of all paths and is the ideal place for spiritual solitude and introspection.
- Monastery of Yperagia Theotokou in Paleokastritsa
This monastery is perhaps the most visited due to its prominent position at the far end of Paleokastritsa with incredible views as well as being one of the first to be built in 1228. Many famous foreign travellers have stayed in this monastery which today also houses a small but very interesting museum within its walls.
- Monastery of Agios Athanasios in Agros
This monastery is entirely run by Greek Orthodox nuns and is unique because of its famous icon painting and restoration workshop that receives orders from all over the world. The main church mural paintings have all been painted by female hands which is strikingly apparent in the choice of iconography as well as in the colours and the rather more fluid lines.
- Monastery of Yperagia Theotokou Myrtiotisis
Another small but graphic residence of Greek orthodox monasticism sits beneath the hanging rocks on the central west coast. Surrounded by olive trees just above sea level it is best visited on foot as part of a pilgrimage journey that will take you past the beach of Mirtiotisa.
- Agia Eufymia in Anemomylos
Agia Eufymia is a beautifully kept monastery that is run by just a few resident nuns. One can easily walk there from Corfu Town or whilst visiting the nearby Mon Repos Palace grounds.
- Monastery of Ypsilou Pandokratoros
It is not difficult to imagine why one would build a monastery on the peak of the highest mountain of Corfu island. At 917 metres it offers a spiritual gate to Heaven and beyond. It is not a very big monastery but certainly one with an impressive location where a pilgrimage is held every year on August 6th.
