Corfu Island is undeniably one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Surrounded by the sapphire crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea and wrapped in over three million olive trees, the island has been endowed with an abundance of natural appeal.

The coastline, that measures around 219km, is characteristically varied with high and low altitudes that offer spectacular views. The island stretches approximately 100km from north to south and around half of that at its widest width.

Due to Corfu’s rich cultural history it has one of the largest rural road networks in Greece. This translates as many small country roads that take you off the beaten track, where one is able to admire the island’s hinterland and less developed areas.

Getting lost in Corfu is hardly an issue. Most roads lead back onto the two main roads that run north and south of Corfu Town. Taking a scenic drive in Corfu is highly recommended as it is an all year round activity that can be set at your own pace.

Locals take to their cars or motorbikes too, for long drives in the hills or far away beaches. They usually end up in a local taverna or seaside restaurant. Taking a scenic drive in Corfu is not something reserved for seasonal visitors only because the island is so breathtakingly beautiful.

The following are S&O VILLAS favourite Scenic Drives in Corfu:

The North East Coast

A mere 25km separate Dassia, where S&O VILLAS are located, and the north eastern most seaside village of Kassiopi. In this short distance, however, one gets some of best views on the island in a single drive. The coastal road is quite windy but the numerous inlets and seas side villages, allow for frequent photo opportunities and refreshment breaks.

Highlights: Straits of Corfu, closest point to the mainland, Agios Stefanos fishing village, Agni restaurants.

Paleokastritsa to Agios Georgios (Pagi)

This scenic drive runs along the north west coast of Corfu and is certainly the most dramatic, if not the most beautiful of all. Getting to Paleokastritsa along the main national road, is easy from S&O VILLAS in Dassia. From there you drive up and through the cliff top villages of Lakones, Makrades, Prinilas and back down to the wonderful beach of Agios Georgios.

Highlights: Paleokastritsa monastery, Aggelokastro castle, Lakones coastal views, cave boat ride

Corfu Central Villages

This is perhaps Corfu’s lesser known area because of not having been included in coastal tourism development. There are many ways to explore the villages of Kalafationes, Varipatades and Kastellani most often reached by a turning to Vyros just 5km south of Corfu’s International Airport. Make sure you don’t leave out the smaller villages of Kouramades and the picturesque Kamara.

Highlights: Achilleon Palace, the Empress Sissy Well, Agios Gordis beach, Sinarades museum.

The seductive South

Corfu’s south is entirely different to the northern part of the island. Long sandy beaches, flat agricultural areas and protected natural reserves characterise the south. Korission lake and nearby Chalikounas beach are of particular interest to nature lovers with sand dunes, migratory birds and a rare cedar forest being the main attraction. The salt lakes in Lefkimmi are also of great interest with pink flamingos residing there much of the year.

Highlights: Kardiki castle, Kardiki cave, Korission lake, Chlomos village, Issos beach.

Corfu’s scenic drives are a source of inspiration, of amazement and at times humbling in the magnificence they offer.
